John Abbott College in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue says it will welcome 150 more students than it should when classes start next week, even though Quebec's ministry of education has not officially sanctioned the move.
?We've never received official confirmation that we can exceed our capacity,? said Donna Yates, director of admissions for the Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue English CEGEP, who said 6,027 full-time day students will attend classes this semester.
The school is approved to admit just 5,600 full time students before facing financial penalties for each student exceeding the cap.
Yates could not say how much money the school will have to pay if the government does not waive the penalty, though such a bill would only come two years from now as they run on a two year budget timeline.
Though John Abbott officials learned through newspaper articles last June that the school had been approved to exceed its capacity, along with Dawson and Vanier colleges, no official communication has yet been sent to the school.
And making things that much more muddled, a recent cabinet shift in Prime Minister Jean Charest's cabinet saw former Education Minister Michelle Courchesne replaced last week by Line Beauchamp.
Since it was Courchesne who allegedly approved exceeding the school's capacity, John Abbott will have to wait to see where things stand with the ministry.
Space cruch
Yates said the school is doing all it can to accommodate incoming and returning students...

Bruno Chartrand, 88, died from his injuries the day after the car he was driving collided head-on with another vehicle.
The driver of the other car, an 18 year-old, suffered only minor injuries.

Anyone willing to don a giant fish head and march in front of 300,000 people should call the Vaudreuil-Dorion library and sign up for what is sure to be a once in a lifetime experience.
The town is currently looking for 200 Vaudreuil-Dorion residents ? or people from neighbouring municipalities ? to march in a night time Just for Laughs parade taking place in Montreal on July 18.
So far, about 150 people have signed up, though more are still needed.
The parade, that will feature giant lanterns, masks, music and a carnival atmosphere, is part of the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival that kicked off this week.
First, however, a practice parade will be held next Wednesday in Vaudreuil-Dorion.
The town was the only non-Montreal borough chosen to participate in what is being called a satirical parade.
Michel Vallée, Vaudreuil-Dorion director of arts and culture, says he thinks Vaudreuil was chosen because it has focused on promoting cultural activities that link residents with those who create and produce many forms of art.
?That is what we are all about and that's what the parade is about,? Vallée said.
Along with Vaudreuil, the boroughs of Villeray?Saint-Michel?Parc-Extension, Saint-Laurent, Mercier?Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Sud-Ouest, Outremont and Montreal North will be represented...
