Hudson/Oka ice bridge stays open during wind and snow storms
It’s a 3-5 minute short cut to Laurentians for commuters and skiers
HUDSON - “Although it has been pretty cold since we opened on February 5, 2007, we have been able to keep the Hudson/Oka Ice Bridge operating everyday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. We were open when temperatures dipped to wind-chill of minus 39 degrees Celsius; when we had a record snowfall of 30 to 35 metres; and during the bitter cold and blowing snow storms of the three-day period in February, we kept on ploughing with our snow ploughs and snow blowers. It was very tough as the winds were as high as 60 kilometres an hour and temperatures at minus 35 Celsius. “ reports Jean-Claude Léger, who operates the ice bridge with his brother, Louis Léger.
“As winter only started on January 15, we opened later than usual this year, and, we hope to remain open until the middle of March. We need 14 inches of ice before it is safe to start operations, we now have 24 inches of ice. To measure the depth of the ice, we use an ice auger to drill a hole through the ice and measure the ice with a stick like the fishermen do,” Mr. Léger told Première Édition.
Three to five minute drive
“It takes three to five minutes to drive across the two kilometres ice bridge on the lake of Two Mountains. The speed limit is 30 kilometres an hour. The road is cleared for a width of 80 feet. It is open to vehicles weighing up to 3000 kilos including cars, small trucks, pick-up trucks, mini-vans and SUVs.“
A short cut
The ice bridge provides a good connection and a short cut between the lower Laurentians and Montérégie, especially for commuters and people who wish to go skiing up North.
“Our family has a long history with the ice bridge between Hudson and Oka. My brother, Louis, and I have been operating the ice bridge for 20 years, and our father operated it before us, which makes a total of 50 years. The ice bridge has opened late a couple of times. There was only one year 2002, when it did not open,” concluded Mr. Léger.
