Discovering Pointe-du-Moulin
Our ongoing series featuring the winners of Les 7 Merveilles de Vaudreuil-Soulanges’ inaugural contest continues. We hope the series will allow readers to discover and hopefully visit their very own seven wonders of the region during the summer months and beyond.
It was recently announced during the June 19 awards ceremony in Les 7 Merveilles de Vaudreuil-Soulanges’ contest that the Pointe-du-Moulin Historic Park placed first with voters in two separate categories: The regional non-profit ambassador category and the historic parks of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges category.

Ironically, this cultural treasure was almost lost to the region earlier this year when programming was cut by the Quebec Development Society. Though it seemed as if the park may not open for the summer, Notre-Dame-de-l’Île-Perrot officials stepped in at the last moment and are now running the historic park and museum for the time being.

City officials say they will try to keep the popular destination open to the public for as long as possible, while other funding options are being sought.

The charming nature park and historic site sits at the tip - or point - of Notre-Dame-de-l’Île-Perrot, on the shores of the Ottawa and St. Lawrence rivers.

The charming, green area boasts an 18th century windmill that can be accessed by visitors willing to climb its winding circular staircase. Once at the top of the mill, the same visitors are rewarded with beautiful views of the river, as well as a glimpse of Montreal in the distance.

The windmill was built in 1702 by Joseph Trottier Desruisseaux, the lord of the island at the time, who opened the mill so the area’s residents could grind their grain into flour by taking advantage of the waterfront winds.

Three hundred and six years later the mill’s wings still rotate on very windy days.

Behind the mill is the miller’s house, where bread is baked each day in an authentic bread oven that dates to 1708.

In order to get to the point, the mill and house, visitors will first pass through an impressive interpretation area where kids can learn how a windmill works, see wheat displayed in its many forms, and see and discover authentic Quebec farm tools from the 18th century. There are many things to see, touch and do at the centre.

The lush grounds are crossed with nature paths spotted with information signs about the foliage and wildlife found in the region. Along the way, animators dressed in period costumes re-enact life from the 1700s and like to be greeted as one would during that time in history.

Once a visit to the windmill has taken place, kids can play dress up in authentic clothing at the miller’s house, visit an animal viewing area, or families can simply sit and have a picnic along the waterfront.

Pointe-du-Moulin Historic Park first opened in 1979 after the miller’s house and the windmill were restored.

More than 15,000 people visited the site the first year alone.

The Pointe-du-Moulin Historic Park is located at 2500 Boulevard Don Quichotte in Notre-Dame-de-l’Île-Perrot. The museum and interpretation centre are open and animation is provided five days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, while the park is accessible each Monday and Tuesday during the summer with no animation. Admission prices range from between $5 to $3 for kids and adults.
