Wyman’s 100th anniversary celebrations
Hudson – “It’s a “Godly Heritage” that Rev. Wyman has left us, that the church should serve the community. We still believe, as in Wyman’s day, that faith is an important aspect of a person’s life, that men and women do not live by bread alone. If we can show the relation between life and faith, then we can serve the community by seeing how faith relates to people’s actual lives”, says Rev. Joe McInnis, the new minister of Wyman United Church.
Rev. McInnis was reflecting on Wyman United Church 100th anniversary celebrations held on Saturday, October 6, and Sunday, October 7. A sold-out “Let’s Blow Our Horn” gala fundraiser was held on Saturday, October 6 at Whitlock Golf and Country Club. A morning memorial service was held on Sunday at Wyman Church.
“During the Sunday morning service, we celebrated Rev. Wyman’s dream to build a new church. At that time, 100 years ago, the church was across the road, in the building where the SAQ is now located. When Rev. Wyman looked across the road, he said the fields would be full of houses one day, and that the congregation should build a bigger church to serve the community. His inspiration was to serve the community, and he died before the church was built. Our mission is to be faithful to the vision of the people who went before us,” said Rev. McInnis.
“It was an incredibly beautiful morning church service. It touched so many different aspects of our church. There was a baptism, a communion, and the dedication of the two stained glass windows. The former junior choir had returned to sing during the service; they are now young women who are in university. It was a homecoming for many of the people who had come for the Thanksgiving weekend from different parts of Canada,” said Ann Bird, a member of the 100th anniversary committee.
The “Let’s Blow Our Horn” gala at Whitlock Golf and Country Club was a smashing success. We were absolutely thrilled at the number of people who contributed with their hard work. We had hoped to have 150 people, and we had to add extra tables to accommodate 170 people”, said Ms. Bird.
