As of yesterday people wanting to avoid unsolicited telemarketer phone calls began registering with a national do-not-call list.
To get onto the list which prohibits unsolicited telecommunications calls–people can register their land lines, cell or fax numbers–go to
www.LNNTE-DNCL.gc.ca, or call 1-866-580-DNCL (3625).
Hearing impaired customers needing TTY service only can call 1-888-DNCL-TTY
(1-888-362-5889).
Though the list became reality this week, don’t expect the calls to stop immediately. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission noted that telemarketers have 31 days to update their own lists to include blocked numbers.
Exceptions to the rule include calls from political parties, polling companies, charities, newspapers selling subscriptions, and organizations with which the consumer has an existing business relationship.
Those registered with the list who continue to receive phone calls after the 31 day period can file complaints.
Individual telemarketers found in violation could face fines of up to $1,500 for and $15,000 for corporations.
Bell Canada has been awarded a five-year contract to operate the list.
