Biography honours founder of Macdonald College
Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue - To honour the memory of Sir William C. Macdonald, who is best remembered as the founder of Macdonald College in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue in 1906, McGill University recently held a gala book launching of Sir William C. Macdonald: A Biography by author William Fong.
Sir William C. Macdonald: A Biography reveals the life of one of Canada’s foremost educational philanthropists, whose contributions to McGill helped transform the University into one of the world’s leading research and teaching institutions. The book chronicles how Macdonald became the father of the Canadian tobacco industry and founder of Macdonald College, which is now the Macdonald Campus of McGill University in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue.
Nobel Prize @R:Macdonald financed the research that lead to Ernest Rutherford’s Nobel Prize for chemistry and the dawning of the atomic age. The book describes how McGill evolved through Macdonald’s financial gifts, including the commissioning of the Macdonald Physics, Chemistry and Engineering buildings. “Macdonald helped build McGill not only as a leading educational institution, but, between downtown and Macdonald campuses, as a place with more green space than anywhere else on Montreal Island”, said Principal and Vice-Chancellor Heather Munroe-Blum at the book launch. @ST:2006-2007 Centenary @R:The book’s publication commemorates the 2006-2007 Centenary of Macdonald College, which today houses McGill’s Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. “Thanks to the generosity of Sir William Macdonald, the Faculty offers outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs in agricultural sciences, food and nutritional sciences, environmental sciences, and bioresource engineering,” said Dean Chandra A. Madramootoo. “In this one-hundred year period, we have been nationally and internationally recognized. We have been leaders in many areas of plant science, animal science, nutrition and dietetics, food science, engineering, water management, soils, microbiology and environmental management.”

“Our student and staff population come from many parts of Quebec, Canada, the United States, and, from around the world. We have excellent facilities for teaching and research, including well-equipped laboratories, experimental farm and field facilities, and the Morgan Arboretum. The campus is surrounded by the Ottawa and St. Lawrence Rivers,” adds Dean Madramootoo. @ST:Five-year campaign @R:On October 18, McGill University launched a $750 million, five-year comprehensive campaign, with the largest initial goal of any university fundraising campaign in Canadian history. The university will use the philanthropic dollars raised to attract and retain top talent in Quebec, to increase access to quality education and to further enhance its ability to address critical global problems. McGill was founded in 1821. It has an enrolment of 33 258 students and 1572 tenured and tenure-stream faculty.
