Bartlett-Lewis & Nolet will serve another 4-year term
School elections in district 21
Dorval - The Lester B. Pearson School Board will hold an election to elect a new school commissioner for Electoral Division 21 (Saint-Lazare / Rigaud) on Sunday, November 4. Armando Jardim and Daniel Olivenstein, have filed nomination papers for the office.
In the other two off-island electoral divisions, the two incumbent school commissioners will serve another four-year term. Susan Bartlett-Lewis for L’île-Perrot and Angela Nolet for Hudson / Vaudreuil-Dorion were re-elected by acclamation as no other nomination papers were filed. @ST:Armando Jardim @R:“As an associate professor at McGill University, I get to see some of the students who have been through the public and private school systems. I find it is very important that they have a solid background to prepare them for their career choices. They get a good education at the Lester B. Pearson’s Westwood Junior and Senior High Schools, which offer programs, which assist students in preparing for the career choices they make after finishing high school”, said Armando Jardim. “One issue for me is the overcrowding at the schools, the need for more school spaces or more schools. Another issue is that the requirements for students with special needs are not being addressed. Both the students and their parents need more attention and help”, Mr. Jardim explained. He lives in Saint-Lazare, and is the father of five daughters. @ST:Daniel Olivenstein @R:“In my opinion, the Lester B. Pearson’s integration model for students with special needs is not an effective method. Regular classes have special education students attached to them, often with an integration aid person, but not always. This way, both the regular and special education students suffer because they don’t receive the services they should. I think we need to use a different model which is similar to that used in the English Montreal School Board where I teach,” said Daniel Olivenstein.
“I hope the LBPSB has a safe schools policy regarding bullying and harassment, which is actually followed. The problem is that policies on paper are not followed. I consider school transportation is vital, that the LBPSB transportation network remains safe. I also wish to promote a culture of discipline and excellence in the board’s schools,” added Mr. Olivenstein. Mr Olivenstein is a head teacher at Mountainview School in Montreal, which is an EMSB special education school dealing with juvenile delinquent. He is a member of Westwood’s governing board, the governing board representative to the LBPSB, a member of the LBPSB central parents committee and transportation representative for parents with the LBPSB. He lives in Rigaud with his wife, Jennifer, and their son. Notices are being sent in the mail to the 2,149 residences of the 3,406 eligible voters in Electoral Division #21, which will provide information about the electoral list and revision period, which extends to October 16. Division 21 includes Rigaud, Pointe-Fortune, Saint-Lazare, northern parts of Hudson and Vaudreuil-Dorion, including properties on both sides of Côte St. Charles in Hudson. A second mailing will be sent out to notify voters of the voting locations. The advance poll is on October 28. For information, telephone 514 780-8683.
